Product Description

Ixora is a genus of flowering plants in the family Rubiaceae, which includes several hundred species of shrubs and small trees, most commonly found in tropical and subtropical regions. Ixora plants are known for their vibrant, colorful flowers and their ability to thrive in warm climates. They are commonly used in ornamental gardening and landscaping for their attractive flowers, which range in color from red, pink, orange, yellow, and white.

1. General Characteristics:
Growth Form: Ixora species are generally shrubs or small trees, typically growing between 1 to 6 meters (3 to 20 feet) in height, depending on the species. Some are compact and bushy, while others may grow more tree-like.
Leaves: The leaves are simple, opposite, and usually lanceolate or elliptical in shape. They are typically glossy, dark green, and have a leathery texture. The leaf size can vary but is generally small to medium in length.
Flowers: Ixora flowers are the standout feature of the plant. They are small, tubular, and densely packed in clusters (cymes or corymbs), with a star-shaped appearance. The flowers come in a variety of colors, with red, pink, yellow, and white being the most common. Some species have fragrant flowers, while others are scentless.
Flowering Season: Depending on the species and climate, Ixora plants can bloom year-round in tropical climates or during specific seasons in subtropical or temperate zones. Flowering tends to be more abundant in warmer months.
2. Habitat and Distribution:
Ixora species are native to tropical and subtropical regions of Asia, Africa, and the Pacific Islands. The plant thrives in warm, humid climates and is often found in forests, along roadsides, and in gardens.
Ixora is commonly cultivated in tropical countries for ornamental purposes and is a popular shrub in landscaping due to its long-lasting and colorful flowers.
3. Species and Varieties:
There are many species of Ixora, and some of the most commonly cultivated varieties include:

Ixora coccinea (Jungle Flame or Scarlet Ixora): This species is one of the most popular, with bright red flowers that form dense clusters.
Ixora chinensis (Chinese Ixora): This species has smaller, often yellow or pink flowers, and is typically grown as a hedge plant.
Ixora species with yellow, white, or pink flowers: Some Ixora species, like Ixora japonica or Ixora tigiensis, produce yellow or pastel-colored flowers that are also popular in ornamental gardening.
4. Key Features:
Flower Clusters: The flowers of Ixora are typically grouped in dense, spherical clusters. These clusters can range from 2 to 5 cm in diameter, depending on the species.
Colors: The most common colors are red, pink, and yellow, though some species have white flowers. The intensity of the color can vary depending on factors like soil type, climate, and exposure to sunlight.
Foliage: The glossy, dark green leaves provide a nice contrast to the bright flowers. In some species, the leaves may have a reddish or purplish tint when young.
5. Cultural and Ornamental Uses:
Landscaping: Ixora is widely planted as an ornamental shrub in tropical and subtropical gardens. It is often used as a hedge, border plant, or foundation planting due to its dense growth and attractive flowers.
Hedges and Screens: Ixora is commonly used to form low to medium-height hedges or privacy screens. Its dense foliage and colorful flowers make it a popular choice for creating attractive, colorful barriers in gardens or along pathways.
Pots and Containers: Some compact varieties of Ixora are grown in pots and containers, making them ideal for balconies, patios, or as indoor plants (in tropical climates).
6. Care and Maintenance:
Light Requirements: Ixora prefers full sun to partial shade. For the best flowering, it should be planted in an area that gets plenty of sunlight (at least 4-6 hours per day).
Soil: Ixora prefers well-draining, slightly acidic to neutral soil. It does well in soils rich in organic matter and requires good drainage to prevent root rot.
Watering: Regular watering is needed, especially during the dry season. The soil should be kept consistently moist but not waterlogged.
Pruning: Regular pruning helps maintain the shape of the plant and encourages more compact growth and more abundant flowering. After the flowering season, light pruning of spent flowers can help promote fresh blooms.
Fertilization: Ixora benefits from regular feeding, particularly with a balanced fertilizer or one high in phosphorus to encourage blooming. Fertilize during the growing season (spring and summer) and reduce feeding during the dormant period.
7. Pests and Diseases:
Pests: Ixora plants can sometimes attract pests like aphids, whiteflies, mealybugs, and scale insects. Regular inspection and treatment with insecticidal soap or neem oil can help control these pests.
Diseases: Ixora can be susceptible to fungal diseases, such as powdery mildew or root rot, especially if overwatered. Proper care with good drainage and air circulation is essential to prevent these issues.
8. Propagation:
Cuttings: Ixora is typically propagated from stem cuttings. Softwood or semi-hardwood cuttings are taken in late spring or early summer, treated with rooting hormone, and then rooted in a well-drained medium like perlite or sand.
Seed: Some species can be propagated by seed, though this method is less common for home gardeners.
9. Symbolism and Cultural Significance:
Symbolism: In some cultures, Ixora flowers are associated with beauty, positivity, and purity. In parts of Southeast Asia, Ixora is sometimes used in religious ceremonies or as a decorative offering.
10. Interesting Facts:
Ixora plants are sometimes used in traditional medicine in certain regions, although they are not as commonly recognized for medicinal purposes as some other tropical plants.
The plant is also known for attracting pollinators like bees, butterflies, and birds due to its bright flowers, contributing to the local ecosystem.
In Summary:
Ixora is a vibrant, flowering shrub that thrives in tropical and subtropical climates. With its bright clusters of tubular flowers in shades of red, pink, orange, and yellow, Ixora is a popular ornamental plant in gardens and landscapes. It requires plenty of sunlight, well-drained soil, and regular care to ensure it produces abundant blooms. Whether used as a hedge, container plant, or border, Ixora adds color and beauty to any garden.

✅Planting And Care

Apply 4 cup(approx. 200 ml) of water when the top soil (1-2 inch) in the pot feels dry to touch.
Do not overwater the plant.
As a rule of thumb, water the plants thoroughly in summer and reduce watering in winter and rainy season.
Water should be applied preferably in the morning or evening.
✅Application of Fertilizer
Before application of fertilizer loosen the topsoil without disturbing the roots of the plant so, it can uptake the nutrients and moisture easily.
Apply organic fertilizer once a month during the main growing season (December-February)
Apply water immediately after application of fertilizer.
✅Re-potting
When a plant outgrows in current pot, re-pot with fresh potting soil and some fertilizer.
Do the re-potting late evening and keep the plant in shady area for 2 to 3 days and then move the plant in its suitable climatic condition.
✅Plant Protection
Remove dead, infected or damaged plant parts and discard them away from the plants.
For any insect attack or disease, you can use Neem oil, Eucalyptus oil or Citrus oil spray for primary treatment.
✅Don’ts
Do not over-water the plant especially when pot does not have drainage holes.

REC: After getting (( VERY VERY IMPORTANT )) the plants, AVOID exposing them to direct sunlight as it can cause leaf BURN. AVOID overwatering your plants. The primary reason for outdoor plant demise is excessive watering.

Planting: Excavate a hole double the size in width and depth compared to the polybag that contains your plant. Fill it up, blending compost with the topsoil. Insert the plant into the newly loosened soil. It is essential to water both Rare Live Plant & Regular (Morning 300ml).
